Yesterday my host family and I celebrated Diwali, a Hindu holiday that commemorates the return of Rama and Sita in the Ramayana.
The Ramayana is an Indian epic that pretty much all the Indians have some idea of; I read the abridged version in my English class here in India.
In the morning, my host mom started to cook and I watched her (and wrote down the recipes so I can attempt to make those dishes when I get back home :)
Other than that, it was a typical afternoon – but when puja started at 6:30, it was time for real Diwali!
Diwali Puja was similar to that of Ganesh Chaturthi (which was in September) – please refer to the “Puja” post for the description of the process.
And everyone started to burn "crackers - aka fireworks."
It was painfully loud - it bothered my ears SO MUCH!
But the colorful fireworks lighting the sky was beautiful.
Oh, and it was great that I had a day off.....
(FYI: Those of you who are avid fans of the Office, there's a Diwali episode. You might want to check that out haha :)
